The Economic and Finance Crimes Commission, EFCC, may have started investigations into the sudden withdrawal of its principal witness in the criminal case filed by the commission against former Ogun State Governor, Gbenga Daniel. The commission accused Mr. Daniel of financial mismanagement while he was Governor.
A former Chairman of Ijebu-East Local Government during the Daniel administration, Tunde Oladunjoye, was put forward as witness by the EFCC, to shed light on the alleged offences of Mr. Daniel.
However, Mr. Oladunjoye, last week, wrote a letter of withdrawal addressed to the Commission’s headquarters in Abuja in which he faulted the appointment of a former aide of the ex-Governor, Kayode Oladele, as the Commission’s Chief of Staff.
“This appointment, to say the least, is immoral and scandalous. Nigeria is now a subject of ridicule before the international community,” Mr. Oladunjoye wrote in his letter. ”What other evidence do we need for Daniel’s new found confidence than the appointment of his counsel and ex-Special Adviser as your Chief of Staff? I urge you to stop fooling Nigerians and assaulting our sensibilities. Remove the log in your own eyes too.”
Mr. Oladunjoye, stating that he stood by his statements and evidence made available to the Commission, then withdrew himself as witness for the Commission in its case against Mr. Daniel.
“With the appointment of Daniel’s Special Adviser as your Chief of Staff, I do not wish to further appear physically as your witness in the prolonged prosecution of Mr. Daniel. I am just too busy to waste my time further,” he wrote.However, following his letter, the Commission ordered a full investigation into the matter based on the negative effects Mr. Oladunjoye’s accusations could have on the Commission’s image
